Before you send it

  • Read the number from your own CNIC card, not from memory.
  • Send 13 digits with no dashes or spaces.
  • Use SMS only to 8171. A number that looks similar is not the same number.
  • Wait for the reply. Do not send the same number many times.

How to read the reply

BISP’s wording can change, so follow what the message says. In general, a reply will tell you one of three things: you are listed and what to do next, you are not currently listed or do not qualify, or you need to register or update your details.

If the reply does not match what you expected, use the contact details on the BISP website. We cannot see or change BISP records.

If a check does not go smoothly

  • A digit is wrong. This is the most common cause. Compare the number to your card again.
  • No reply arrives. Check your signal and balance, then try again later. Networks can be slow.
  • Wrong household member. BISP records are tied to households. Ask BISP which CNIC is registered for yours.
  • Old CNIC details. If your card was renewed or corrected, your details may differ from older records.

Questions about the 8171 check

Does this tool show if I am eligible for BISP?

No. It only checks that your CNIC number has a valid format. Eligibility is decided by BISP and shown in its reply to your SMS or on the official 8171 portal.

Is my CNIC number saved or sent anywhere?

No. The number is processed in your browser. It is not sent to a server, saved in cookies or local storage, or shared. Closing the page or pressing Clear removes it.

How do I check my status by SMS?

Open your phone’s messaging app, type your 13-digit CNIC number without dashes, and send it to 8171. BISP replies by SMS. Standard network charges may apply, so check with your mobile provider.

What does the verification code do?

It is a simple demo check that stops accidental or repeated clicks on this page. It is not a security feature, and it is not the captcha on the official portal, which you will complete separately.

Why does my CNIC fail the format check?

Usually a digit is missing, extra, or mistyped. A CNIC has exactly 13 digits and does not start with 0. Compare each digit with the number printed on your card.

My number is valid here but BISP says something else. Why?

This tool cannot see BISP records. A valid format only means the number is typed correctly. BISP’s reply depends on its own household data, and that data can change. Contact BISP through the official website for help.

Can I check a family member’s CNIC?

Only with that person’s permission. BISP records are linked to households, and the CNIC that matters is often the one registered in your household’s survey. If you are unsure, ask BISP which one to use.
